Warwick Baker

Biography

Warwick Baker was born in Canberra and now lives in Melbourne. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Photography at RMIT in 2007. In 2009 he was a finalist in the National Youth Self Portrait Prize. He was then nominated for several other national awards including the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize in 2011. Baker is currently working on his first solo exhibition for Lindberg Gallery, funded by Arts Victoria. Entitled Australian Badlands, the project's aim is to unearth, reveal and confront past wrongs and their implications; actions and events which, for whatever reason, have not been sufficiently addressed by our society and culture at large.

Artist Statement

In January 2011, Warwick Baker photographed several flood-affected areas in Queensland and Victoria: Rocklea, an industrial outer suburb of Brisbane, the farm where his aunty, uncle and cousins live in Closeburn, Northwest of Brisbane, and Mildura in Northwest Victoria. Baker photographed familiar Australian landscapes made unfamiliar and surreal by the flooding.
