Natascha Stellmach
Natascha Stellmach lives and works between Melbourne and Berlin. Her work has been exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney; Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the Next Wave Festival, Melbourne; and in film festivals in Vienna, Edinburgh, Hannover and Taiwan. Stellmach was also the recipient of the Australia Council for the Arts 12-month Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin artist residency in 2006/07. Her solo exhibition Complete Burning Away was exhibited at PICA in 2010. She is represented by Galerie Wagner + Partner, Berlin.
A sealed envelope, Stellmach's work Artist Statement reads "That's confidential and kind of magic" and is the artist's response to our desire for absolutes. Referring to Stellmach's recent project at PICA, which revolved around the myth of immortality and the ashes of Kurt Cobain, the text responds to the question of how the artist acquired the alleged ashes, reflecting on transience and the vulnerability of truth.
