PICA Residency Artists 2001
30 November 1999
Throughout January and February 2001, PICA supported three studio residencies as part of our ongoing commitment to local emerging artists, to enable them to continue to develop their practice within a supportive and professional context.
Studio exhibition: Saturday, February 24 - Sunday March 4
This year, students and recent graduates from the School of Art at Curtin University and the WA School of Visual Arts at Edith Cowan University participated in the fourth annual summer residency program. An exhibition of the work developed throughout the two month period was presented in the studio's during the final week of the residency.
Studio 1: Nirada Eaton and Natalie Brown
Nirada and Natalie graduated with a BA Visual Arts (Painting major) from Edith Cowan University, 2000.
With an interest in philosophy underpinning her work, Natalie Brown has been exploring ways in which the application of colour to canvas can create sensory effects to the viewer. Nirada continued an ongoing investigation into the process of demolition and fragmentation - of object, image and space, and created an installation based work that used layering and the fragmentation of space as a means of revealing the image.
Studio 2: Tania Doropoulos and Jennifer Lowe
Tania and Jennifer graduated with a BA Visual Arts (Sculpture major) from Curtin University, 2000.
Tania Doropoulos's work incorporates photography, video and installation. Tania is interested in documentary photography and surveillance and notions of morality within mass media and the making of recordable images. Jennifer Lowe translates two dimensional images into three dimensional space. Her work is concerned with hyper-real perspective and the deconstruction and reconstruction of representational space.
Studio 3: Christian de Vietri
Christian will complete his BA (Visual Arts) from Curtin University in 2001.
Christian planned to work on three installation based projects during his residency; 'A Revised Structure of the Universe' which has explored how the universe is structured through the use of sound, video projection, text and diagrammatic information; and an interactive installation of a rainbow.
