Halfeti: Only Fish shall Visit
25 January - 24 February 2002
Fuel Bar @ PICA
'Abdullah had ferried local farmers, townspeople, and Kurdish donkey-sellers across the Euphrates for many years. Within a few months he would stop. The town of Halfeti would be half submerged beneath the waters of a new hydro-electric project, the Birecik dam. Many thousands of people would be compelled to leave their homes and livelihoods for an uncertain future in a modern housing development.
'This is the record of an ancient place on the eve of it's disappearance.' (from the beginning of the interactive photo-documentary).
Impressive in it's sheer depth of media, this project takes photo-documentation to a new level. Photographs, video and sound recordings are authored together to present a virtual environment that the viewer can explore at their own pace.
Over 3000 photographs were taken during a four week study of the town's history, landscape and people..
